The guys were testing this week. I know what you’re thinking: Kids are challenging every day. Yuk, yuk, yuk. Yes, they are. But my guys were taking their end-of-year exams this week. On Tuesday, it was just under three hours of tests (unless I added wrong…sheesh, good think I’m knot taking them thar tests!).
I tell you, good thing my parents raised me right, too. The temptation to peek in at their answers was overwhelming. I almost broke out in a rash from the inner battle that raged. But, honor scout that I am, I sealed up the tests and shipped them off.
This whole test thing is weird. I did look at the tests before I gave them to the kids. We totally over-learned again this year. Darn it! What will they do with all this extra knowledge? Thing is, they’ll go bananas if we take too long of a break ...

…going to be announced in a second.
First, I get to do the closest thing I’ll ever have to an acceptance speech. I want to thank my parents, my agent…<smack>…oops, caught in a daydream there. Here’s my real speech: I want to thank everyone who played to win the Tea House. This thing is so cool, I want to keep it for myself. Can I say the winner is me? No? Bummer. I truly wish I could send you all one. Maybe Sir Buffalo Sushi will grow enough runners off his spider plant and we can ship one of those to everyone. Short of that, if you get a chance to check out DuneCraft, definitely click on over. They’ve even got a plant that will come back to life if you forget to water it and it “dies.” Now that’s my kind of plant.
Also — the cockles of my heart were ...

So tea has been in the news a lot recently, but once you get past the parties and the politics, you’re left with one of the most popular, drinkable drinks on the planet: good old tea. To celebrate Earth Day this week, we’re going to celebrate plant life all week (although I think Sir Buffalo Sushi’s planning a little side trip on Friday into animal life).
And to kick it all off: Another giveaway! This one’s from the super-cool people over at one of my favorite places, DuneCraft. If you like plants, these guys have you covered. We first stumbled across this company a couple years ago, when we discovered that Sir did not inherit my purple thumb — the kid’s a budding horticulturist. He started with one plant kit (he was all into carnivorous plants back then) and now his room’s a jungle. Ferns, spider plants, aloe, you name it, ...

April brings showers, taxes…and Earth Day! To celebrate Earth Day this month, I’ve got two fun giveaways planned here at Polka Dot Suitcase. The first is a book I wrote, Planet Earth: 25 Environmental Projects You Can Build Yourself. I know what you’re thinking (“Sigh. Another one of your books, Kate?”). But this book has a special place in my heart. Not only was it the first one I’d written, but it’s about one of my favorite topics — the environment. Simply put, I love me some nature. But not in an extremist, wear-biodegradeable-underwear kind of way. Rather, in a “wow, how amazing is the world we live in” type of way.
So this month, I’ll be exploring some of the cool things our world’s got going on for it. Oh, and check back in a couple weeks — I’ll be giving away a fantastic plant kit to celebrate the actual ...

To mark the Grand Opening of the Polka Dot Suitcase, I’m giving away one of my books, The Human Body: 25 Fantastic Projects Illuminate How the Body Works. It’s geared toward kids from 9-12, but no matter how old you are, tell me you don’t want to learn how to make homemade skin care products or find out what happens if you decalcify a bone? And do you really want to just be squirting some lame dollar store squirt gun with your kids or at the office picnic when you could be firing off your very own double-barrel pumping heart squirter?
See? You know you want this book. Don’t have kids of your own? Go ahead, win this and give it to a kid you know. Don’t know any kids? Give it to a librarian. They usually know a kid or two.
As I was researching the book, it dawned on me ...
