If you’ve poked (polked?) around Polka Dot Suitcase at all, you know I’ve got a couple books out, published by Nomad Press. Since we’re wrapping up the Blogathon, I’m working on little sleep last night (courtesy of a thunderstorm/deadline one-two punch), and I feel like I need a breather…I just want to direct your attention to this great little publisher.
It’s an indy publisher from Vermont, in the land of Yankees where they grow people rugged and industrious. When I first started writing for them several years ago, I was tickled–we’re a perfect match. The books Nomad produces are fun, intelligent books that are loaded with the kinds of crafts I’d do with my own guys.
They’ve got a book for just about everything your kiddo may be learning, whether it’s history or science. Civil War? Got it covered. Solar system? Check. Ancient Egypt or Greece? Yup and yup. AND…I just spotted ...

The guys were testing this week. I know what you’re thinking: Kids are challenging every day. Yuk, yuk, yuk. Yes, they are. But my guys were taking their end-of-year exams this week. On Tuesday, it was just under three hours of tests (unless I added wrong…sheesh, good think I’m knot taking them thar tests!).
I tell you, good thing my parents raised me right, too. The temptation to peek in at their answers was overwhelming. I almost broke out in a rash from the inner battle that raged. But, honor scout that I am, I sealed up the tests and shipped them off.
This whole test thing is weird. I did look at the tests before I gave them to the kids. We totally over-learned again this year. Darn it! What will they do with all this extra knowledge? Thing is, they’ll go bananas if we take too long of a break ...

So, I was trying to find a “toot your own horn” category to place this under, but the idea of ego-stroking still makes me squirm — maybe a leftover token from my Catholic upbringing? So I’ll just file this under “education.” But in any event, the National Science Teachers Association has a really generous review of my third book, Energy: 25 Projects Investigate Why We Need Power and How We Get it. Many thanks to Maria Mesires, the seventh grade science teacher who took the time to check out the book and write the review! When you work by yourself all day, it’s kind of nice to know someone’s out there actually reading your work besides, you know, your mom and dad…

Totally tickled to announce my new book is out!
Energy: 25 Projects Investigate Why We Need Power and How We Get It just showed up on my doorstep late last week. (My next book is Titles: How to Make Them As Long As Possible and Why We Do It, coming soon.) It looks pretty slick — the illustrator did a fun job with the pictures and the layout team really did a super job.
If you’ve got a kid (or know of any) who would really be “turned on” (har har, energy joke) by finding out about renewable energy sources, or “shocked” (har har, stop it!) to find out how limited our supply of non-renewable sources are, please check it out (and let me know what you think). Since reading about this stuff is fun, but DOING something with the info is even better, the book is full of projects to explore ...
