Of all the blogs in all the world, and you stumbled across mine. Thanks for being here! Now here’s a gift — as if you have all the time in the world to just poke around online and read blogs, right? — hand-picked blogs for curious and creative parents like you:
For the parents of boys: Blogging ‘Bout Boys. This one’s been a favorite of mine for a while now. It could be because I’m, you know, a parent to boys. But it could also be because Jennifer shares some interesting ideas and points of views about being a parent to boys.
For the parents of campers: Dutch Oven Madness. I initially fell for this blog because a) I love cooking outdoors and b) I’m always up for more Dutch Oven recipes and c) I thought the writer was an everyday camp cook like myself. But now I realize she’s actually some ...

So if you’re a faithful reader, you know that even though I grew up in the Northeast and could practically play out in the snow in bare feet, I’ve now lived in the South too long. With the freakish cold weather we’ve been having down here, I’m miserable. COLD. Even the ends of my hair feel the cold. I don’t know how I did it all those years.
But happy, happy days arrived last week: Warmth! 60 degree temps for a couple days in a row. And this week’s forecast: Not freezing cold. Yippee! One problem, though, is that my camping lust went through the roof. Problem solved…we had a backyard campfire.
My camping cookware has been sitting in the laundry room, teasing me. And I noticed my Dutch oven, even after I dutifully oiled it after last use, was kind of sticky. So the campfire gave me an opportunity to re-season ...

So you know what’s almost as fun as cooking with pie irons? Cooking outside with a cast iron Dutch oven!
I oiled up a little 2-quart beauty, fired up the charcoal chimney, donned my welder’s gloves, and did some Dutch oven cooking this afternoon. We made “Sticky Chicken,” perhaps in honor of the crazy chickens who took the money. Sir couldn’t wait for the chicken to finish before making himself an appetizer — roasting marshmallows over the top of the Dutch oven. I dutifully turned the oven a quarter turn every fifteen minutes.
Result? Perfectly amazing Sticky Chicken. It’s absolutely insane how easy it is to cook this way. I lined the D.O. with foil so cleanup was painless. You’d think the charcoal would cool down too much — I was expected half-cooked chicken, yuck — but everything was flawless. It’s wrong how giddy I was over this success.
What’s Sticky Chicken? It’s ...

Our camping trip a couple weeks ago is still on my mind. Mostly because I’m still feeling guilty/amazed that I enjoyed the tent camping so much. Recap: I used to tent camp a lot in my bachelorette years, and then during our early marriage years. Did a bit when the kids were younger. Then my parents started letting us borrow their camper, and the thought of sleeping on the ground, crawling in and out of a tent, and washing dishes at a spigot didn’t seem as appealing. So we went several years camping — but not in a tent.
Enter our Atlanta trip last month. Tent camping. As I said at the time, shockingly fun. We’re already planning the next tent camping expedition. Two things I’ve been thinking about:
Gadgets. I don’t know if these really count as “gadgets,” but I have the burning desire to own them: Dutch oven (for the ...
