Back from another camping expedition! Real quickie, though. We were down in Carolina Beach where the kids had a crabbing class — wading knee-deep into a salt marh, tossing bait fish out, and luring blue crabs back through the shallow waters (released them all, naturally, along with the shrimp, minnows, and snails who were also captured after fierce battles). There were 15 absolutely fantastic boys in all, most of whom followed up the crab adventure with a class later that evening on venomous plants and animals in North Carolina.
And then…camping! Tents pitched, fires lit (and knocked down by overzealous marshmallow-eaters and built back up again)…fantastic time. Ended too soon.
Now we’re back, smelling vaguely of campfire, and tired, tired, tired. But in a good way.

So you know we’re big into camping here at Chez Polka Dot. We were blessed to adopt a camper, but tent camping works for us, too. (Much as I would like to say there’s no difference between the two, there kinda is: Air conditioning/heat, a fridge instead of a cooler, beds off the ground…) The great thing about camping, no matter your abode, is that kids can always find a way to entertain themselves in the great outdoors. The only thing more fun than watching your kids play? Playing with them, of course! To celebrate how much camping rocks, we’ve gathered up a couple activities you can do with…rocks!
Melt-painting. In addition to the s’mores, it helps to have another fun way to engage the flickering flames — especially if you’ve got kids. Last year, we found a neat campfire art activity. First, you find a bunch of stones. Flat ones ...

No, we’re not going on vacation any time soon. (Boo!) But over on a travel board I sporadically read, the buzz is about pre-vacation dinners for the family. You know, like the kids aren’t excited enough to be going to the Grand Canyon, Atlantis, or Disney World so you pump ‘em up just that extra bit by having a “themed” dinner?
I actually think it’s a really fun idea, and worth considering, especially if you’ve got quite some time before your departure date. It’s like waiting for Christmas — it never…seems…to…be…getting…closer. So break up the time by hosting themed pre-vacation dinners (there’s gotta be a tidier way to say that). Some examples — if you’re going to…
…Disney World (first of all, can I come?) — pick a Disney movie. Say, 101 Dalmatians. Get a spotted table cloth. You can probably find lots of spotted-dog cups and plates at the party store. ...

I’m so excited, I could just bust.
Or maybe that’s just because I ate too much for breakfast and my pants are tight. But I don’t think so. I think it’s because we just scheduled our First Camping Trip of 2010. Squeeeeee!
Destination: Charleston, SC. We’re going to be doing some volunteer work. Bagging oysters. Or maybe counting them. I’m a little unclear on the details. But nevertheless, we’ll be doing our part to help the environment. And we’ll be camping. Doesn’t get better than that.
Well, you’d think it wouldn’t get better. But I think it will. Looks like there’s a great aquarium down there, too, that we’ll check out. And then geocaching is mandatory. We’ll have to hit the ocean — even if it’s cold, Sir Buffalo and Mister Steel can’t resist getting in the Atlantic every chance they get. And…camping!

So if you’re a faithful reader, you know that even though I grew up in the Northeast and could practically play out in the snow in bare feet, I’ve now lived in the South too long. With the freakish cold weather we’ve been having down here, I’m miserable. COLD. Even the ends of my hair feel the cold. I don’t know how I did it all those years.
But happy, happy days arrived last week: Warmth! 60 degree temps for a couple days in a row. And this week’s forecast: Not freezing cold. Yippee! One problem, though, is that my camping lust went through the roof. Problem solved…we had a backyard campfire.
My camping cookware has been sitting in the laundry room, teasing me. And I noticed my Dutch oven, even after I dutifully oiled it after last use, was kind of sticky. So the campfire gave me an opportunity to re-season ...

And I adore my digital camera and camcorder. But take my phone (actually, don’t take it…but feel free to upgrade me). I’m on a data plan, but my phone is a dinosaur by today’s tech standards. While it’s not exactly one of these beauties:

…it’s still fairly outdated by today’s iPhone standards. It’s like holding a calculator up to the side of your head. Nevertheless, I can check my email and on a good day, the weather outlook.
So on our tent camping trip a couple weeks ago that you’re undoubtedly tired of hearing about, the guys and I found ourselves huddled up on the last night in the tent, listening to a thunderstorm outside. Thunder is so much louder when you’re huddled in a tent, ever ...

Our camping trip a couple weeks ago is still on my mind. Mostly because I’m still feeling guilty/amazed that I enjoyed the tent camping so much. Recap: I used to tent camp a lot in my bachelorette years, and then during our early marriage years. Did a bit when the kids were younger. Then my parents started letting us borrow their camper, and the thought of sleeping on the ground, crawling in and out of a tent, and washing dishes at a spigot didn’t seem as appealing. So we went several years camping — but not in a tent.
Enter our Atlanta trip last month. Tent camping. As I said at the time, shockingly fun. We’re already planning the next tent camping expedition. Two things I’ve been thinking about:
Gadgets. I don’t know if these really count as “gadgets,” but I have the burning desire to own them: Dutch oven (for the ...

So, as you know, we went tent camping down in Georgia recently. I mentioned earlier my parents have a camper they let us use occasionally, and I hadn’t tent camped in a while. (Turned out great, BTW.) But what happens if you want to go camping, don’t have a camper, and you think that tents are so 2008? Well, you’re in luck. I just poked around and found you a couple great alternatives to the traditional dome tent.
Got an extra $50,000 on your hands? Well, you could buy this beauty, which comes with a funky round mattress. Or, you could take that money and purchase one amazing camper, with electricity, AC, a potty, a microwave, and possibly even a truck to tow it.

What if you like the idea of hanging from a tree, but not the price? Here’s the poor man’s version of the pricey tree-hanging-thingy:

Not into hanging from trees? ...

So we’re back. We did a tour of Atlanta, about which we’ll share in upcoming posts. Glad to see last week’s posts appeared as they were scheduled to do — how weird to see technology functioning properly! Too bad the house couldn’t clean itself, too, while I was gone.
We tent-camped the whole visit. I used to tent-camp, as often as I could. But then my parents got a cool camper that they let us borrow, and suddenly sleeping on the ground, with no private potty, washing dishes with a spigot…kinda lost its appeal. So I have to admit, I was being a little snobbish about the whole aspect of spending several nights in a tent. In June. In Atlanta. But my parents have their camper up in NY for the summer. If we’re gonna camp, it’s gonna be in a tent.
Turns out — it was great. Sir and Mister are ...
