THE WALL, by Eve Bunting
A boy and his father have come to the Vietnam War Memorial to look for the boy’s grandfather’s name among those who were killed in the war. They find his name surrounded, but far from lost, in the rows of print that “march side by side, like rows of soldiers.” “I’m proud that your grandfather’s name is on this wall,” says the boy’s father. The boy agrees, adding, “but I’d rather have my grandpa here.” Before this powerful book is half finished, readers will be deeply moved. Bunting’s understated prose captures the meaning of the memorial to the American people, especially to those who lost loved ones, without being maudlin or heavy-handed. Himler’s gauzy watercolors are a perfect accompaniment: impressionistic enough for the characters to appear as everymen. A sensitive and moving picture book, and a great discussion book as well. –Catherine vanSonnenberg, San Diego Public ...

I was going to be very clever and find something that rhymed with “crime” for the title of the post, but it’s o-dark-thirty in the morning and I couldn’t come up with anything. Alliteration will have to do.
Anyhoo, I mentioned earlier I’m doing NaNo again this year. But this year, I’ve got a fabulous writing buddy to do it with me: Sir Buffalo Sushi! (Applause, applause.) We’ve got a very cool salt rock lamp that we turn on when we’re in writing mode. It starts the inner creativity juices flowing and alerts Mister and Big Fish to tiptoe past us very quietly because we’re working on our masterpieces. When this light’s a-burnin’, don’t come…uh…okay, still can’t rhyme this early.

Oy, it’s been several days since I’ve polka-dotted. I’m so bad. My excuse is that I was finishing up my fifth book. I know I say this every time, but this one was So Much Fun!
I know I’ve still got the edits and the tweaks and the “forgot this!”s to go through, but phew — I’m happy to be finished with this first round. Fun stuff, though. Sometimes it seems like writing can get a little mechanical, so it’s always fun to have some zing in there.
Speaking of zing and fun writing…my wonderful agent has been working hard to shop my baby around. It’s a book proposal that I cannot *wait* to turn into a book. Wise writing experts always advise you to send out queries or book proposals and then move on. Think about something else. Better still, work on something else. But seriously. That’s a joke. We writers ...

Hello, Bloglings! Sir Buffalo Sushi here.
I’ve been reading a lot lately, and have some favorites. *= 1 star, **= 2 star, ***=3 star, etc., etc.
The Invention of Hugo Cabret
This is my favorite book of all time. It’s around 500 pages, but 280 something are pictures. I think all ages would love this. I rate it: *****
Diary of a Wimpy kid
Coming in second on my list is Diary of a Wimpy kid. I read this in about three and a half hours, but I’m a fast reader. It’s like reading the the funnies. Or watching Homer Simpson eat two dozen pink doughnuts in five seconds… It’s so innocent, but extremely funny. I rate this: *****
Among the hidden
This is the kick off book of a great series of seven. Great readings! The ending was predictable, but still a good book. I rate this: ****
Animal Ark
Rounding out my four is Animal Ark. ...
