Autumn things
So, back in May, I participated in a blogathon. One post every day for the merry, merry month of May. I did it. (I think. That was a while ago and age hasn’t been kind to my memory.) So, lately I think I’ve been on a new kind of blogathon. One post every week. Or so. This is working out well. I’m totally cut out to be a blogger, I can tell. I’m really good … Read entire article »

Gimme a break, Patriots
Okay, so yes, I’ve been neglecting PDS for a while. See a trend? Oy. Just been piled up with work — a good thing! — but bad on me for neglecting ye old Polka Dot. Coming out of hiding because I’m just so disgusted with the New England Patriots. Come on. Really? Was it so necessary to run up the score on the game against Tennessee? Good grief. I’m not a Titans fan, but didn’t anyone’s momma ever teach them compassion? Yes, I know it’s a game. Yes, I know some guys think it’s hilarious to pummel the snot out of the opponents. But many teams have taken the high road and not continued a slaughter. At least my own kids were embarrassed by and disapproved of the Pats’ poor sportsmanship. … Read entire article »

A PDS Mom’s Guide to Football
Ah, autumn. How I love you. Cooler temps, crunchy leaves, that wistful end-of-summer, romantic vibe in the air. And, of course, the crack of helmet-to-pad contact and grown men in tight, shiny pants. Yup, it’s football season. At Chez Polka Dot, Sundays can get interesting. We’ve got the AFC and NFC represented in our family room: Steelers fan, Bills fan, Panthers fan, Redskins fan. When any of those teams go head-to-head, things can get interesting. When … Read entire article »

Dogs have beauty marks, too
Here’s something I heard today that makes me want to roll my eyes until they pop out of my head: Someone sees a black mark (or two or three) on a dog’s tongue and pronounces, “That means they’re part Chow!” Because, naturally, dogs like Chows have blue-black tongues (Shar-Pei do, too, BTW, but you rarely hear that a dog is part Shar-Pei because of the tell-tale tongue). Here’s the deal: NO. It does not mean they’re … Read entire article »

Ladder ball and pie irons
Sir Buffalo Sushi’s rolling his eyes because yup, it’s another camping post. It’s in my blood. I just finished up a book deadline last Tuesday. Big Fish called from work and said, “It’s gonna be a great week — let’s go camping!” Who am I to say no? I’d just pulled a bunch of late nights finishing up the book, the weather was indeed gorgeous, and my new-to-me camper was sitting in the cul-de-sac patiently. We piled in and off we went. …but first, a quick stop at the Biggie Mart, where I scored an end-of-season, discounted ladder ball set. It was a whim purchase, I’ll admit. Well, upon arriving at the campsite, Sir Buffalo Sushi and I got to work setting up the camper, and Mister Steel began assembling the ladder … Read entire article »
