Thanks!
Great, big, polka dotted thank you to everyone who entered the drawing for the Planet Earth book. I had such a great time reading everyone’s thoughts about what they liked most about our world. Every one made me smile, so I wanted to say “Thanks!” We’ll reach into our stash of numbers on Monday and pull out a ticket to see who gets the book — again, I so wish I had enough to send one out to everyone. I’ve gotta stop doing these giveaways…far too emotional… … Read entire article »

Easter only 2 days away! :-)
Hi, bloglings, Sir Buffalo Sushi here. “Only 2 days ’till Easter!”, all the buzz is mostly about. Peter Rabbit, Chocolate bunnies, Easter eggs, chicks, rabbits, ham, all that good stuff. Well I’m going to compare a traditional Easter day with the Easter day at Chez Polka Dot suitcase. Morning: Traditional: sleep in, slowly get up and have a nice hearty breakfast, walk around and collect eggs. Ours: Try to wake up at 5:00 am, run frantically around the house grabbing all the eggs you see; after collecting eggs, eat a breakfast of cereal and juice. 9:00 am- 4:00 pm: Traditional: Church, nice family picnic, stroll in the park, go to annual Easter Parade. Ours: Church, hike a intense 5 mile hike with a 7 pound backpack on, grab a 44oz soda at Sheetz, also grab some baked … Read entire article »

Easter eggs
Easter is less than a week away (followed by Tax Day but let’s focus on the good things, okay?). I was thinking about Easter this morning during prayers, and then I got to thinking about the commercialization of Easter and all the symbols. Which led me to think about Easter eggs. I’m not talking about the colored eggs, the chocolate eggs, or the candy eggs. (Although now that I put that in my head I’ll be … Read entire article »

Book giveaway: Planet Earth
April brings showers, taxes…and Earth Day! To celebrate Earth Day this month, I’ve got two fun giveaways planned here at Polka Dot Suitcase. The first is a book I wrote, Planet Earth: 25 Environmental Projects You Can Build Yourself. I know what you’re thinking (“Sigh. Another one of your books, Kate?”). But this book has a special place in my heart. Not only was it the first one I’d written, but it’s about one of … Read entire article »

Sir Buffalo Sushi’s top 6 ways to get rich
Hello, earthlings! Sir Buffalo Sushi, yet again, I know you’re all thrilled to be reading my post again. Well, I’m 11 years old now, and I’ve been thinking; I should be thinking about my career… But, I don’t think I’m going to have a job, I’ll probably just get rich at age 20. This is how I’ll do it: 1) I have a huge 1200 card football-card collection (which will probably be worth $2,500,00 when I’m grown … Read entire article »

Coffee as a literary technique
Yesterday, one of the people I stalk follow on Twitter (I mean really…”follow”? Hello, creepy! Let’s call it what it is.) shared this video: [youtube 4Yawpg_WlCw] So I’m thinking…if all these newsy folks can use words like hoity-toity and fuddy-duddy and get on national news, why, that’s reason enough for me to use them. And what’s more — they’re just plain fun to say. Who doesn’t like a good sing-song with their morning coffee (“Honey, this coffee is just an itsy-bitsy bit cold. Would you mind giving me a teeny-weeny warm-up?”)? In fact, why stop with sing-song? There are so many perfectly good literary techniques to weave in our everyday lives: Overstatement/hyperbole: “This coffee tastes like melted tar mixed with ear wax.” Pathos: “Baby seals are crying because you didn’t finish your coffee.” Onomatopoeia: “Squawk! This … Read entire article »
