Finding fun when you think there’s no fun to find

Sir is staying on top of me, asking every morning, “Did you do your blog?” And today I had to hang my head and say…nope. Some days it’s a little harder to find itty bitty things that make you go, “Wow!” than other days. It’s a beautiful, sunny day here in Polka Dot Land. Temp’s going up to a comfy number. No pressing deadlines, and the ones I have I’m looking forward to tackling. But no little joys. No little pauses in my morning that made me think, “Cool!”

It reminded me of this thing you do with kids: When you’re outside, you stop and look around. Ask the kids if they see anything living. They’ll see the trees, the grass, the robins. Maybe your family dog or cat. Anything else? Nope, nothin’. Then you flip over a rock and see all the little buggies and squirmy little wormies scuttling and squirming away. In that case, you had to move something to see what was there.

This weekend, we went hiking. It had rained, and the path was flooded. We kept slogging along, and dozens and dozens of little frogs were leaping out of the way. Naturally, Sir and Mister were catching them (okay, I did, too). Finally, Mister was stalking a little frog in about an inch of water. I was staring at his target, too, when suddenly Mister yelped and pointed. “Look at that huge one!” We’d been so intent on the little frog that we never even noticed this big old fat yellow frog that the little frog was sitting on. In that case, you had to broaden your focus to see what was there.

Finding fun when you think there’s no fun to find sometimes can be part of the fun itself. With that in mind, I’m off to browse some blogs. Find some fun I don’t know now, but I’ll know once I’m done reading what someone else knows. Find that funny?
